Prevacid is a medication that is used to treat persistent heartburn otherwise known as GERD. Another name for the condition treated with this drug is acid reflux.
The active working formula of Prevacid is lansoprazole. It usually comes in a delayed release capsule and/or delayed-release substance for oral suspension. Usually it is avaialble in 15 to 30 mg dosages.
The active working formula of this drug is an odorless crystalline powder. Sometimes the tablets come in a flavored form, usually artificial strawberry flavor.
The main function of it is to neutralize the stomach and stop acid from backing up into the esophagus. This is what helps relieve the burning, discomfort, and bloating feelings.
It also is what helps eliminate any abdominal pain that causes you to feel like you are about to have a heart attack. This product also is used to help sooth and heal an eroding esophagus.
Usually Prevacid is administered to patients who suffer from GERD two or more days per week. It also is usually given to people who suffer heartburn/acid reflux symptoms on a regular basis even if they change their diets. If a person has an erosive esophagus, treatment usually lasts four to eight weeks.

Some people might experience an allergic reaction. If this happens, you should stop it immediately.
Additional side effects include as follows: diarrhea, abdominal pain, or constipation. In the worst-case scenario, it could actually worsen gastrointestinal problems and not improve them.
Usually side effects can be prevented, however, if you tell your doctor of any meds you are currently using. You should be completely honest about this.
In order to be safe, you should tell your doctor about all prescription drugs you are taking. For instance, you should alert your doctor if you are using one or more of the following: ampicillin, atazanavir, digoxin, iron, ketoconazole, theophylline, tacrolimus or warfarin.
Taking one of these medications may not necessarily men you will not be able to use Prevacid. However, you are going have a doctor monitor you in case of complications.
Most users usually are cured of all heartburn or acid reflux conditions. Usually results are noticed in only a few days, with the condition being corrected in an average time of four to six weeks.
Your doctor will inform you for how long this drug should be used. Do not take it for longer than that specified time. Furthermore, do not under any circumstances use it without a prescription!
