Use of Prevacid and Other Heartburn Treatment Tips

Prevacid 24 HR is used to treat persistent heartburn. This new non-prescription formula of lansoprazole has become available since the latter half of 2009.

Usually this medication comes in 15 mg doses. It is meant to be taken in the morning before breakfast as many as 14 days in a row. It is meant to work for a full 24 hours after you take it.

In addition to using a product like Prevacid 24 HR to relive heartburn there are other ways to care for your self. Please read the following preventative and treatment tips:

  • Relax for a minimum of one hour after a meal. If at all possible, while doing so sit upright. This will encourage your food to move downward and outward rather than up and outward into your esophagus.
  • Exercise is another option for people. It helps relieve stress and it improves the function of your entire digestive system. It reduces possibility of heartburn symptoms.
  • Quit smoking as soon as possible. If you are not at all close to thinking of letting go of this potentially harmful habit yet at least think about it. At the very least, consider making a phone call to a quitting hotline for guidance.
  • Eat as early as advanced before bedtime as possible. As mentioned already, lying down is one cause of poor digestion that causes food to enter your esophagus. If you do go to bed, keep your head up for awhile. Maybe you can prop yourself up with pillows.
  • At the very least, make sure you sit up for a minimum of 30 minutes after taking the Prevacid pill. This will ensure proper functioning of the medication and it will make digesting your food much easier.

If necessary, you can take Prevacid for up to 14 days in a row, once a day. Then, if you need to be treated again, you would wait four months and then use it again. You may be able to take it for longer than 14 days if your doctor happens to give you a special order to do so. 

You should not if you are not told to, and you should always share your complete health history when receiving your physical health exam before taking this product. Your doctor should be especially concerned if you are using any other antifungal or antibiotic meds or you are using heart medications.
